Insights about gender equality

Gender equality- a topic that is often discussed widely, but practices are barely followed. When we hear this term, we end up thinking about women and their rights, but gender equality doesn't only mean advocating for females. It includes a platform where both men and women are treated equally with partial opportunities and rights.

Unfortunately, our Nepalese society is still backward to bring such evolution and lead by patriarchal norms. Here, ladies are always bounded within the four walls of a house and responsible for all the household chores. Cooking and washing are basic life activities, but these are treated as a gender role. Let's raise voice against such malpractices and bring changes within our homes. I know it's a vast process, but at least instead of tempting ourselves, we can make a little effort to change the stereotypes.

1. Still, many people, even women, presume that this is even not a problem and take it normally. First of all, we should realize that discrimination among gender is definitely a huge issue that needs to be emphasized.

2. The change begins at home and from you. In this lockdown, everyone is at home and free. So, let's ask and counsel our male family members to carry out or help in minor household chores and make them realize that being a housewife is not a piece of cake.

3. Asking your brothers to wash dishes and cook foods can be a beneficial step to teach them that girls are not only responsible for such activities, and maybe in the future, they can be supportive for their wives.

4. Remember that if you are a lady and asking for equality, you should also be responsible for earning and provide a companion for your family expenses. The way where performing household stuff is not only a woman duty; similarly, managing finances is also not a male responsibility. Hence, the the dual-income family should be promoted.

5. Discussion about these things in a family is essential to bring gender equality inside the home. After all, everything has a solution, if talked peacefully.

Let's not forget that a happy family is the one where everyone's work and opinions are appreciated and respected. If you are a female, raise voice to avoid victimizing yourself, and if you are a male, join hands to help your sisters, mother, and wife in this lockdown.
